Fair review, but "their formula" works and there is nothing wrong with it. There is needs to be further backing for anyone to understand why critics hate Coldplay's formula you described. The band is trying to evolve, but why should they change themselves in a way that is no themselves? 42 & Yes are two of the best songs on the album, minor flaws are being invented I believe just to not sound allover positive for the band.

I agree with your remarks Stephanie; after repeating listenings to this album, I can honestly say it is the BEST album I have heard in a long time. I also think the decision to bring Brian Eno was a brilliant one and made all the difference between this being an 'okay Coldplay outing' to being one of the best albums ever.

Faint praise from the reviewer and unfairly so in my view. Most people listen to music to get an emotional response and for enjoyment. Art albums may get critical acclaim but they are enjoyed by few. Coldplay manages to do what the Beatles did 40 years ago....bridge the age and culture gaps by being universally popular. As far as Viva La Vida is concerned and track "42", its my opinion it's their best album and best song.

I frankly don't understand why no one can give a positive review to this album in particular. While I think the first 3 coldplay albums were all very similar, but increasing in quality, a LOT of bands do that. U2 is famous for it's 3 album cycles and then totally changing.
Now Coldplay hasn't TOTALLY changed; however, this is a departure and you know what? IT'S A BRILLIANT ALBUM! It evokes emotions, imagination of deposed ancient kings, and is just incredible to listen to and hear all the work that must have gone into it.
I'm *really* tired of critics trying to be "cool" and bash Coldplay. It's pretty pathetic--like a little boy's club. :(
Great one Coldplay!!! :)
