The reason the cheerleading team didn't make the ballot is that they are barely visible at sporting events and not all that interesting to watch. If I were a student I wouldn't pay for this either. If the Athletic Dept. thinks they are important then let them fund it.

Traditionally, Stanford hasn't had cheerleaders. Recently, we've had students try to create a cheerleading squad, but not only are they a danger to themselves, they only go to events with the biggest exposure. No wonder students don't like them. Let them end and create something to lead yells in an offbeat and Stanford way.

Really? A cheerleading squad that only goes to the games with the largest audience? What a ridiculous idea. It's a good thing that the band isn't like this...</sarcasm>
Stanford Cheerleading performs at the games the athletic marketing department asks them to cheer at. They receive transportation to/from away games and money for uniforms from marketing, but that's it. They also compete against other schools at national tournaments and do pretty damn well. The money they requested was to be able to compete more.
As for being a danger to themselves, all their training and performances are supervised and they haven't had a single injury in six years. I'd say that's a better safety record than nearly any sport on campus.
Finally, there is no such thing as the "Stanford way". The Stanford way is to do whatever the hell you want and do it well - saying the Stanford way is to be "offbeat" is prescribing behavior.

Get your facts correct>
Stanford Cheer squad is self supportive. If the funds were avilable for them you would see them at all the events.
In the Pac 10, Stanford is the only school that does not offer Cheer Scholarships. These kids give thier own time and money to perform for you. They pay for all of their travel, for their uniforms and all expenses.
Oh and by the way... They just place 3rd at Nationals in February.

I know for a fact that the cheer team has had injuries. I was on the team and was dropped-often. This past year a gir had a concussion but still cheered. THere stunts I saw during basketbal season were scarey and unsafe. They should be shut down or bring back a coach that knows how to coach.
