Dear Editor:
I hope that Stanford will reconsider this collaborative effort that, on the surface, sounds very collegial and progressive. The oil that the Saudis control is exorbitantly priced and the profits from that oil is used to fund Islamic schools that teach Wahhabism (a Muslim sect known for its strict observance of the Koran). These schools exist not only in Saudi Arabia but many other countries including the United States. One of them is in Washington D.C. One theoretically-liberal university cannot counter the emotional and spiritual harm done to individuals in numerous grade schools, high schools and universities already existing in that country that severely restrict participation.
Professor Peter Glynn is wise to identify the project as having a “potentially positive impact on the nation”. I am not confident that he is correct. Stanford could do more by publicly announcing in Saudi Arabia that they intend to enroll and hire women and men without regard to religion or race. Blandly stating that Stanford “…would not discriminate in its selection of faculty or students…” will not mean anything there. I hope Stanford will act courageously in pursuit of this very political “hot potato”.
Sincerely,
Julie O’Neill
the oil prices are extremely high in the united states (if you havent noticed )yet do you know what reason this is. the us government, yes the president, inflate the prices of the oils. if you haven't noticed, go to xe.com and check out the conversion rate of the dollar to Saudi riyal. its low and its set (never changes)therefore, why would all the presidential runner say that saudi arabia is inflating the prices of the oil for americans? They are IGNORANT. They dont know the facts. get the facts right! Julie, as well, do you have any information to back up this statemant,"profits from that oil is used to fund Islamic schools that teach Wahhabism," ? Do you? next time your gonna say something accusatory like that you better back it up with solid facts.
