Spot on daily. The don't ask don't tell policy isn't one the military can change - only the politicians can.
Since ROTC classes count as units at Santa Clara, Cornell, and gasp, UC Berkley, why does the faculty continue to think the courses are not academic enough? I've learned more in a Mil-sci class than in PWRII.
By not allowing students to have ROTC on campus, we drive away potential future officer that may later be in positions in the government and military to make positive changes.

This new editorial board has taken a hard right since Winter. What has happened?
Direct Hit with the previous comment from "Cardinal". ROTC or Military SCience class show up in the Stanford Catalog (pg 731) but NOT in the Stanford Schedule. Just a way the Faculty Board has to keep the bureaucrats at bey with all the Federal monies coming into the University. The military needs more critical thinkers. Look - the Cold War wasn't won with bomb, only the threat of them and a strong free thinking society that believes that change is a good thing and healthy for a civilized society to thrive. It, change, was accomplished from within the Soviet Union. Thus, as far as the policies of the Military on Homosexuality and such, changes can only come from "free critical thinker" on the inside. Here's a hint - there are more gays in the military than you might think. They choose to keep it in the bedroom.
Allowing ROTC on campus would be endorsing an organization that is fundamentally and officially homophobic; in other words, it would be telling bigots they are welcome on campus. Not until 'don't ask, don't tell' is revoked would it be appropriate to allow ROTC here.
"Such sentiment against the U.S. Armed Forces as an institution is not widely held by Stanford community members today — no matter what their political leanings or opinions regarding the United States’ current military campaigns."
Is this true? I think that there are many people on this campus who are clearly against US militarism. Furthermore, we do have ROTC Clubs at Stanford, even if we do not have training facilities, but according to Stanford policy, we should not - any VSO that discriminates in membership is not allowed to be a VSO - i guess we make exceptions for the ROTC because we're afraid of losing money.
If we want thinkers to end our wars, these need to be people outside of the military apparatus. The current trend of US militarism, and frankly, open imperialism, is an unfortunate consequence of the increased size of the military industrial complex. Eisenhower was right, this is a destructive and unfortunate relationship that needs to be curtailed if anything. Adding another leg to the iron triangle--our nation's colleges and universities--can bring nothing more than further destruction.
We need negotiators, ambassadors, and informed politicians, outside of the military and not subject to the faults of its internal bureaucracy and bias toward warmongering. We do NOT need more officers, least of all officers drawn from a body of students who could grow to be scientists and intellectuals, to fill other, more beneficial, professions.
Anjo: Dead on. DA/DT is institutionalized bigotry. Supporting such a stance is disgraceful conduct unto itself.
Lenin was a thinker. That ended up well.
"We need negotiators, ambassadors, and informed politicians, outside of the military and not subject to the faults of its internal bureaucracy and bias toward warmongering. We do NOT need more officers, least of all officers drawn from a body of students who could grow to be scientists and intellectuals, to fill other, more beneficial, professions."
Wow, I'm inferring from that statement that you think those in the military will automatically become warmongers unable to wrest themselves away from the "military industrial complex"? God forbid, say, soldiers like Eisenhower , Wesely Clark, Colin Powell and locally William Perry, become "negotiators, ambassadors, and informed politicians" themselves. Oh wait, they have.
Few opponents of ROTC have actually experienced what the program is like. It first and foremost emphasizes values, leadership, self motivation - it does not turn you into a mindless zombie of the military industrial complex. Give Stanford students and officers a bit more credit. There are plenty of ROTC students right now who will become scientists and intellectuals.
Don't ask, don't tell is a downright wrong policy, but banning Stanford students from participating in ROTC only prevents more people joining that would make a difference in reversing that decision. If more people joined ROTC and saw that when the bullets are flying over your head, it doesn't matter if the soldier next to you is homosexual or not, then perhaps they could see that gays in the military isn't a bad thing at all.
Banning ROTC on campus isn't going to make the politicians in charge change the policy. Instead of a superficial protest like a ROTC ban, perhaps Stanford students can focus on making real protests to the leadership in this country that will help bring about change?
The curious thing is that when the bullets fly, the military looks the other way at sexuality. An old Queen I know (I can say that, I have his permission) was doing every soldier he could in Saigon, and no one cared. The Army needed him. During times of peace, the discharges increase. "Don't ask, don't tell" will be gone as soon as the next predident rocognizes that the far right Christian fringe has had its day, and did not impact his/her election.
I liked the Lenin comment.
Keeping ROTC out of Stanford is sort of like Russia's boycotting the UN during the Korean vote. The question is simply whether Stanford want to have an influence on the United States military--objectively a hugely significant institution--or not.
In regards to Anjo's comments, I wouldn't necessarily say that the government is officially homophobic, not even fundamentally. The people in the military and in the US government choose to be homophobes. I say this because ROTC courses do not teach officers to be homophobic, nor does the military excludes anyone necessarily to join its ranks. This particular policy is used to protect those who are homosexuals to serve to protect and defend the Constitution, by (unfortunately) restricting them from "coming out." As long as they don't mention they're sexuality, they are safe within the military.
I agree with you that there are homophobes in the US government as I mentioned above, but there are many cases of assaults against flamboyant characters made by homophobes in the military. Those who personally attack their comrades are a disgrace to the service and to the Constitution. And the military court system prevents those from questioning the sexuality of individuals. In such situations, this is the policy's only way to protect individuals from It's an unfortunate situation.
By attacking the ROTC program itself is to attack an organization that is part of a larger group that is trying to protect its service members. And there are many members who feel more or less support homosexuals in the military. More or less, your argument's fallacy is guilt by association.
I personally support any one to join the military (at his or her own choosing). The situation calls for a better policy, but no one so far has come up with something better, like not allowing bigots and homophobes from joining the military (though in a sense this would sound absurb as perhaps the military would lose many, many people). But by discouraging individuals from joining, it may just discourage those who may someday lead an initiative to better the policy and the government's stance.
Anjo - 5/25/07
Allowing ROTC on campus would be endorsing an organization that is fundamentally and officially homophobic; in other words, it would be telling bigots they are welcome on campus. Not until 'don't ask, don't tell' is revoked would it be appropriate to allow ROTC here.
The Faculty Senate voted 38 to 6 On May 7, 1970, to end academic credit for ROTC courses effective August 31, 1970, because the courses did not meet the high standards of courses taught by faculty in Stanford departments, the courses were not open to all Stanford students, and the military (instead of Stanford) chose the faculty. President Kenneth Pitzer's Advisory Committee on ROTC Affairs then recommeded that the ROTC program be suspended and the Faculty Senate approved the committee's recommendation on June 4, 1970. The reasons for ending credit for ROTC courses have not changed in the past 37 years. Those who like to mention distinguished ROTC graduates forget that ROTC graduate Lt. William L. Calley, Jr., was convicted of the premeditated murder of 22 Vietnamese civilians in the March 16, 1968 My Lai masscre.
So you condemn ROTC because of one officer who broke the law? There will always be bad apples in any job.The army is no exception.
In any event, Calley was commissioned an officer through Officer Candidate School NOT ROTC. He was in the OCS Class No. 51 of 1967.
It is laughable that faculty condemned Military Science courses as ones that do "not meet the high standards of courses taught by faculty in Stanford departments", especially since most of the faculty would never have experienced those courses themselves. How can you get credit for courses like CS-1 (aka how to use a computer), physical ed classes, any number of Student initiated classes or pwr-2 (aka how to use powerpoint) when you can't get credit from a course through ROTC in Military History or Leadership Fundamentals? How can swimming and dance be counted as credit when military field training and navigation cannot?
Other prestigious universities have ROTC on campus, their faculties don't seem to mind.
Since you mentioned Calley, who again, was NOT a ROTC cadet, let me elaborate a little. Calley attended one year of
junior college, flunked out, enlisted in the Army and somehow managed to become an officer through Officer Candidate School. A senior officer in the Army would later remark after the My Lai Massacre:
"[Lieutenant] Calley never would have become
an officer if we were not so shorthanded.
Why are we short-handed? Because
the bastards at Harvard wouldn't . . . step up
to their responsibilities"
- Muhlenfeld, "Our Embattled ROTC," Army (Feb,
ruary, 1969). p. 28; Atlantic, (Nov., 1970), p. 83.
By depriving the military of officers, we are only setting ourselves up for more under qualified, ill suited people like Calley from being drawn into the military. The military will recruit these people out of desperation, not by choice.
As we have seen in our prestigious college history, Stanford makes great leaders, and it is thus a shame Stanford hasn't been able to have more leaders in the military, where they could have positive and powerful influences.
The do not ask, do not tell policy is mandated by congress, not the military. If this policy is the reason that Stanford rejects ROTC activity on campus and the spirit of public service that it exemplifies then the university should consider either attempting to force its change through lobbying or it should reject federal support completely. The banning of ROTC reinforces the elitist identity that the university resists. The ban effectively states "the military is the realm of the poor and undereducated", a message the actions of the Stanford community are furthering.
I agree 100% with this author's statements and concerns. The idea that an ROTC leadership or military strategy class is not up to the 'standards' of Stanford is ridiculous. If students can get credit for an "interpretive dance" class or other equally laughable class (I'm sorry, besides a job on broadway, where is that going to get you?), then certainly the classes offered by ROTC--which train young men and women to protect our nation's freedoms--should certainly be available on our campus.
