Thank you and congratulations to Prof. Metzel for his efforts at eradicating stigma, ignorance, and lack of awareness and understanding of schizophrenia by the general public. My gratitude to Loren Newman for his efforts as a writer for doing the same. Speaking from first-hand experience, Mr. Newman's article is so aptly titled, and the truth about schizophrenia badly needs to be heard. I am a 52-year-old woman who has struggled with this devastating and, at times, terrifying disease since I was in my 30's. In my 20's, I was a normal, healthy young woman. At 25, after a major life change and unwittingly entering into a bad relationship, I began to struggle with severe depression for the first time in my life, and it was left untreated, partly due to my own ignorance at the time. It was 1979, and I knew nothing about it. I married the man I was involved with, and that man would prove to be sociopathic. The onset of schizophrenia was slow and gradual over a ten-year period, and as the stress in my marriage escalated and grew beyond my limits, so, too, did my mental health grow worse. It was not just my opinion that my husband was a sociopath. Other people who knew him felt the same. I am intelligent, of strong character, a deep sense of integrity, and a good heart. Never have I been an inherently violent person prior to the onset of this disease, nor have I been since that time. I have met numerous other people at the Clubhouse for people with mental illness in my community, and none of them are violent. At 34, my husband left me with nothing. Despite the odds of finding myself a single mother of two young sons soon after the manifestation of my disease, and dealing with financial hardship, as my ex-husband did not provide child support, I attempted to work as a secretary to support us. I suffered job loss twice due to my illness. After being on Disability for three years, I again attempted to work. I managed to work for four years before I found myself unable to continue due to my illness. I remarried. Unfortunately, I used poor judgement for the second time when I chose a mate. For certain reasons, I ignored the red flags and married someone who was dishonest and not of good character and integrity. We did not share the same values and definitions of love and marriage. I was always honest with him about the existence of my illness. Severe depression was one of my symptoms, and I suffered from it during our marriage. My husband was not in marriage with me for the long haul, in sickness and in health. Because of my disease, I could not perform in that I could not be who I normally was and do what I normally could do. But, to his own admission, when he claimed to love me, made promises and vows, he thought it was OK just because he meant them at the time that he said them. In my heart and mind, the very concept of a promise, a vow, and truly loving someone to the core, with their strengths and weaknesses, does not mean a thing if you only mean it at the time that you say it. If one's spouse is or becomes ill or disabled, one has made a decision to have compassion and love and support them whether their medical condition is mental like mine or physical, such as heart disease, or due to some accident which leaves them paralyzed. Schizophrenia and Depression are no different from any other medical condition. Life had kicked me in the teeth with schizophrenia, and through no fault of mine, I was suffering the symptoms. Nevertheless, my partner cheated on me and left me for another woman. Others have said, and I agree, that my greatest accomplishment was successfully raising my two sons despite the havoc of schizophrenia and my life situations. My sons are now fine young men of good character, integrity, and good hearts. It may seem like no great accomplishment and that everyone does it, but for someone in my shoes, raising my sons successfully was of great magnitude. After being unable to work for nine years, I find myself in the position of needing to work. Fortunately, I feel able to work again. I am presently struggling with fine-tuning my medications due to side effects so that I can work once again. I apologize for being so prolific with my writing. I personally have a love for words and writing. When I read Mr. Newman's article, I could not sit back and say nothing. I wanted to say something, but I did not know what to say. What I have told you is one woman's encapsulated story and experience with schizophrenia and its effects on my life. This version does not begin to describe what I have experienced, and I know there are worse cases than mine. I hope I did not sound pathetic; I have learned it is only through living my life with tremendous inner strength and courage that I am where I am today. I have never attempted to tell my story in any forum such as this before. I hope I have made a difference in at least one person's misconceptions of schizophrenia and mental illness, in general. Thank you all for giving me a chance to express myself and for listening.
Congratulations to this woman for her courage in remarking on the above article. I also have been greatly stigmatized during my illness and perceived as likely to become violent though I never have.
The article raises some very complex ideas about race which I do not fully understand. Certainly African American individuals as well as those individuals having schizophrenia are both often mis-perceived as more likely to become violent.
There has been some reporting that those with schizophrenia are more likely to become violent than the general population. The families of ill people are sometimes even frightened by their own sick child. On television news, we see violence in the African American community reported nightly that suggests there is more violence there than in white communities. We have to ask ourselves, can these things true and yet the stigma against these groups still wrong.
Our democratic roots provide an answer in the law. People regardless of what group they may belong to are first regarded as individuals. They are judged on their own character.
Then how does the mental health community promote an understanding of the mentally ill as individuals with brain illnesses rather than as members of a group having antisocial characteristics? Just as in any racial stereotype, the stories of the individual lives tell many different stories -- many of these stories are of great courage, character and strength. While newspaper stories have occasionally reported on individuals who have overcome mental disabilities, we can generally count on the media to reflect the prejudices of the day. A few articles on one side don't change much. A nonsensical "there's no such thing as a bad boy schizophrenic" will not sway the public.
Just as in the freedom movement of the 1950s and '60s, we must seen as individuals of character, yet in a group that faces discrimination based on stereotyping. But who could lead such a movement for the mentally ill?
Last week on 60 Minutes was a report of a wrongful death of a mentally ill prisoner that during the freedom movement would have shocked the nation toward political change. What has become of us that we are no longer shocked? Every four years, the speakers at the Democratic Convention mention a few of our national health priorities. Each time, I pray they will mention mental illness, but they never have. Where are the doctors to report the patient is in critical condition?
I can't help believing if Martin Luther King were alive today, he would a spokesman for the homeless and incarcerated mentally ill. Today, like WalMart prices, rights under the Americans With Disability Act are being rolled back as though they don't apply to the mentally ill. The lawyers hear the message loud and clear, don't represent the mentally ill because you can't win. Why? Because the courts are responding to public misconceptions that the psychiatric community and the drug lobby have failed to counter. My opinion is that it is their responsibility and should their passion.
All this verbage, and there is no easy answer. I do, however recall the rich song of the songwriter Bob Dylan:
There is no martyr among you now
That you can call your own
So go and act accordingly
And know you are not alone.
I am glad to know that there are people out there who are trying to make the general public understand mental illnesses. I have made many friends at school who have been diagnosed with mental illnesses including schizophrenia, bipolar dissorder,and depression to name a few. I won't deny that there is a problem here that needs to be addressed. They need help badly, but just because they have these dissorders does not mean that they are less of a person or don't deserve their rights as people. Further more, someones race should have nothing to do with how they are treated, dissorder or not. This is a time of equal rights.
My friends may have a dissorder or two, but they are all good people who only need a chance to show that they can be honest contributing members of society, not ranting violent lunatics.
People are hurt by people, not the mentaly ill. The individual who hurt the person may have a mental condition, but they should not be defined by that condition. They are still human. What they did may have been wrong, but they are still human and should be treated that way. They should be treated with respect and dignity, not feared for what a steriotype sais about the illness.

Thank you for having the courage to cover a topic as controversial as schizophrenia. Having schizophrenia myself, I have seen very little coverage of it; much less the exposure of the common misconceptions. All of the schizophrenics that I have met have been more meek than aggressive. In fact, I would earmark them as being more inclined to become victims than perpetrators. I think that organizations such as NAMI should continue to be on the lookout for mass media misrepresentations of the condition, as most people learn about schizophrenia from mainstream television.
Regarding my own experience with schizophrenia, I am atypical. I have voices that tell me they love me and that eschew violence. I'm hoping my story will someday be told in order to create a new collective opinion of schizophrenia.
Thank you for this article as I have recently become involved with a gentleman who is diagnosed with schizophrenia and in trying to grasp a better understanding of this disorder, I am trying to understand what he deals with on a day to day basis so that I can be accepting and compassionate.
But that cannot be achieved that unless I have a further understanding of what schizophrenia really is. I have my own disorders, or "quirks" as I prefer to call them - depression, OCD, anxiety disorders - so mine + his = a rather interesting roller coaster. Thank you for the article; however, I was able to gain a greater insight due to the comments from personal experiences.
I am an active member of NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness. We are an organization which works to advocate and educate families who have a loved one with mental illness. We advocate for better care and legislation. I have a family member who is mentally ill. I am witness to the loneliness and stigma of mental illness suffered by my family member. People with mental illness are often misdiagnosed, and some who are really bipolar are diagnosed as schizophrenic. It is true that they are often victims of violence rather than perpetrators. But it is the ones who are untreated or refusing treatment who are three times more likely to be violent. These are the ones who make the news and cause fear and misunderstanding in the public's view of mental illness. There is so much to be gained with educating people and most especially with having good care available and affordable.

Nevertheless, I think Sandy is blessed with two nice sons. For me, I ve just overcomed a stressful and traumatic relationship with my boyfriend. He has schizophrenia and has made me into depression and broke my heart too. ,because my exboyfriend is secretive, have an unfaithful tendency, looks at women all the time when we go out and also tend to love only himself and his family,as he travels overseas and outstation by himmself and with his family, leaving me behind, and also indulging in luxury where els I was not allowed to work and he did not allowed himsellf to help me too, so I was dependent on my savings and it was a hard time for me as it was going lesser and lesser.There was once he left me at a crying at a restoraunt to rush off to meet up with two women from vietnam,and also there was once he travelled all the way to china with his brother and friend for business cum pleasure,(China is a country where asian men find sexual pleasure)after coming back, he gave me many reasons and manipulated me to accept too.But it wasnt because of the manipulations and lies that I gave in , but it was because of my love for hi that I wanted to give us a second chance.Although my exboyfriend was in this state, I find that it isnt a reason for us to be unfaithful or commit aldultry. Sandy, I hope that you do not blame yourself because of schizophrenia, I didnt betray my boyfriend and I personally feel that it is the your ex husband himself did not have strong moral values.Nevertheless, I have made a promise that if my boyfirend had an illness , I would never leave him, I , researched and find soulutions to his illness, arrange vitamins that would help him etc,tried my best to stay by him untill I literally broke down and almost wanted to kill myself. As that time, I was living in a situation of mental abuse and helplessness. My mum was very sad as I was her only daughter and all her hopes was on me, because she is a single mam too. Therefore, I had to leave before I turned into a more terrible state. It is really hard to heal from this relationship because I had very high hopes on him and me,and still loved him, and sometimes I cry alone at night too. but I know time heals and there will be a bright future ahead of me..... if there is anybody experiencing what I have experienced before, I want to let you know that never let anybody take away your confidence and dreams,and never let failed relationships tear you down, becuase , if god took away something from you, he has plans to give you something much better.
