you forgot the 8th deadly fan:
"the sh*tty author for a college newspaper who tries to come off as original, but simply resurrects old material from legitimate journalists (who may not be that great themselves)"

"Why should we stand up and cheer when our team is on offense?"
This might win the most ridiculous comment of the year award.

"overlooked": I guess you missed when I stated in the article that it was based off of Simmons' column, and that some of my examples were the same as his. I think that pretty much adds up to me addmitting that it is not completely original. Let's try paying attention next time we read something, OK?

SportsFan: that was edited a bit. I meant you don't want to be extremely loud when your team is on offense. You want to be quiet so they can concentrate and listen for play calls

Sam, those same "alpha fans" you mention are the ones yelling at everyone to shut up while the offense is on the field. Are they justified in one instance, but not the other?

The alpha fans I dislike and was referring to in the article are the ones who want to cheer loudly when the offense is on the field, because obviously they do not realize that they are in fact hurting the team.

The ones who are correct and tell the yellers to be quiet so the offense can concentrate are fine, because they know what they're doing. I have no problem with the knowledgeable "alpha fans", only the stupid ones. Hope that clears things up.

Sports Fan, do you not have anything to do with your time?
This was a great article and pretty much everything in it was true. Well said.

BiggerSportsFan: I disagree. I've liked Sam's past columns, especially his one about the MLS, and I think this is a clunker. All writers have them, this is Sam's. I look forward to next week's piece.

When I wrote this, I knew it was going to be a sort of "hate it or love it" thing. I've actually gotten some more positve comments about this one from my friends than for my previous columns, and obviously I'm getting some heat as well... truthfully though, I don't mind if someone reads my article and doesn't particularly like it. What I can't comprehend is when some moron like "overlooked" doesn't even pay attention to what I write and proceeds to hate on it anyway. If you're gonna contest something, at least know what you're contesting...

Oh well, Sportfan, I hope you enjoy next week's, and BiggerSportsfan, I'm glad you liked this one.

Such a rise out of you, Sammie. I like the fire! And by the way, I did read that you based it off Simmons, but it was just not as compelling the second time around. So yes, i was just hating.

But in a much more real sense, I going to assume that you've never played competitive football before (co-ed IM's don't count), because it's pretty stupid to think that you're 'hurting' your team by cheering for them on offense. If you'd have MAYBE said that cheering loudly during signal calls might hurt a team, then it would've shown a level of competency that you otherwise lack. But maybe it does hurt the Florida's of the world when Tim Tebow rips off a 15yd scramble to score a TD. Shame on the swamp for cheering.

In sum, you might just want to be a little more specific in what you're intentions are prior to writing an article. Valliant effort, but in the end, like this year's football team, it ultimately fails....

Haha, excellent piece. I laughed quite a bit while reading this.
I especially love the part about the drunk guy offering to buy you a beer. Classic.
And overlooked, he DID say that cheering loudly during signal calls would hurt the team; "It makes far more sense to be quiet so that the players can listen for the playcall and any possible audibles."
If anything here fails, it is Overlooked's reading ability.

overlooked: Sorry, but if you hate just for the sake of hating, that's grounds for me to label you a moron, at least in my book... and I played basketball for 4 years at my high school. Actually, I was a point guard- luckily, our fans knew to be relatively quiet while we were on offense so that my teammates could hear me calling out plays. Of course, they would cheer AFTER we scored.

Pete: thanks for backing me up. Glad you enjoyed the column
