“If it’s negative, we would want to talk to them about safer sex,” explained SHPRC counselor Bianca Carpeneti ‘10. “If it’s positive we can offer them other resources depending on what they would want to do.” -- from above article

In other words, Bianca Carpeneti would discuss with the pregnant student whether or not the student wants to kill her baby? The student let herself get pregnant, knowing full well the convenient option to "abort" existed in case a pregnancy would get in the way of her life. "Sorry, Baby, it's out to the garbage can with you because Mommy has other priorities for her life."

It's sickening and chilling to see this view of children, where life and death matters are treated in such a nonchalant way.

I would like to respond to the above comment.
First off, the SHPRC does not impose any set of political or moral values on the students who go to it. In accordance with this position, counselors do not selectively withhold information about local resources in order to force a student into one decision or another. Counselors are trained to work with a student to help them figure out where to go next for guidance; their ultimate decision is entirely their own. The counseling is designed to prevent students for feeling shocked or overwhelmed, but the amount that they draw on the counselor for support is up to them—if they don't want to talk or find out about available resources, they don't have to. I don't know what is so "sickening" about allowing a student that autonomy.
I find "Kim"'s tone in discussing student pregnancy despicable. Students don't "let" themselves get pregnant— if a pregnancy is unwanted, then it is the result of an accident, not passivity. And no matter what your position is on abortion, it is hardly a "convenient" option you can treat with "nonchalance." I don't know of anyone who would make that claim.
Kim, I take offense at your moral posturing to Biana Carpeneti's comments. Pregnancy tests are a great resource offered by the SHPRC for all students regardless of their views on abortion. Using this as your platform for accusing counselors of encouraging casual decision making is entirely unfounded— if anything counselors encourage careful decision making.
I don't know if you scour the internet looking for places to give outlet to your views, but you've missed the mark here. You obviously have no grasp of the SHPRC or life as a student at Stanford, and I think Ms. Carpeneti deserves your apology.
