"Saller will be joined by his wife, a professor of anthropology, whose academic appointment at Stanford is also in progress."

hmmm, "his wife" doesn't get named. Hardin gives the impression that she either A. was too lazy to find out the name of the incredibly accomplished academic she refers to only as "the wife," despite further discussion of "the wife" in this paragraph or B. she believes that wives are defined by the name/accomplishments of their husbands, and thus not worth mentioning.
