Unxenophobic it may be, but I've been thinking how very little the U.S. has been influenced by all these people it has welcomed. I don't always read David Brooks, but I did read what he said yesterday about Seymour Martin Lipset. That was a reminder of how entrenched the Puritan attitudes are here, and how impossible it is for these to be dislodged, or even to make any real room for other views. It's sad, when you've believed in celebrating diversity, to have to realize what limits there are to that.
