It is unfortunate but true. In order to obtain PERK the victim must be taken to VMC for the exam to be completed. But, for the whole story, the writer needs to examine why this is necessary.

The nurses who administer the exam must also be able and willing to testify in court procededings on these examinations and evidence recovered. Stanford Hospital may not be willing to allow their nurses the time and exposure for that testimony.

It is not necessarily Stanford’s decision to supply or fund the PERKs. The District Attorneys Office, which controls the Crime Lab in Santa Clara County, may also have regulations where and by whom the examinations are administered. These examinations are forensic procedures, not completely medical procedures and must be administered by persons training in gathering evidence which includes avoiding contamination and proper packaging.

In addition to the Rape Hotline, there are peer groups, advocacy groups and counseling available to assault victims on campus.
