Well, I'm only stuck here for 5 days into the break, and I was relieved to hear of an on-campus option... but I had no idea what staying in Hammarskjold would be like until I read this article :( If it was a fair assessment, it was illuminating, and it's making me nervous...

This is shameful. What a great way to squander potential good will with foreign students who will be leaders in their countries! A few ideas:
1. House them in SLAC at a small fee.
2. I would bet there would be plenty of Stanford alums, or parents of current alums, in the area who would be pleased to have a mini-foreign exchange for a few weeks. I think the SU Parents' Club coordinates Thankgiving dinner for students who are stuck at SU for Thanksgiving. Maybe it would be willing to seek host families locally for these students if the administration would not take this on (tho it should). I bet many local folks would be pleased to enrich their lives in this way. The hosts and the student could meet, and if they thought it was a good match, its a done deal. If either party is uncomfortable, no deal (very unlikely to happen).
3. Leave one or two dorms open (say 3X rooms as need for the foreign students). In these dorms students who are leaving could volunteer to let a foreign student use their room for the break. If students are uncomfortable with someone else being in their room with "their stuff", give the student some nearby storage to put his stuff for the break. The foreign student has to move it back (or he or she owes the student whose room it is some $ if they don't do this)(deposit for this put up in advance). Foreign student pays some fair rent to SU for the use of the room.
There no doubt are more possible solutions those closer to the situation can evalute. One thing is clear: the current situation is deplorable, and must change.
Good luck!

Hammarskjold is not the only house open over break-- Chi Theta Chi is also open, and I believe Sigma Chi is, too.

Hey Everyone,
Donny has made some good points and we have looked into most of these options.
1. We have looked into SLAC and places like Schwab but there are issues pertaining to cost, security, access to food, transportation, etc. that didn't make this a viable option.
2. Last week, I placed a search through the Alumni Association looking for host families. Also, I will be placing a search through the Stanford Report to look for faculty memebers willing to host students.
3. Graduate dormitories are open during break. I have been working very closely with Housing to place students in vacancies in either Crothers/CroMem. We will have numbers next week.
ASSU has been working very closely with housing, the Bechtel Center, and the Alumni Association to provide better options. All parties have been very VERY helpful and this program is currently being launched.

Yeah, right. Like a bunch foreign kids are likely to live in a frat for 3 weeks. I lived in Hammarskjold last winter. Believe me, it was BAD. Not to mention we had to live in the computer cluster (which is a small shack outside the house) for 3 weeks, including Christmas and the New Year with spider webs. We paid the $250 for staying and had to clean the house on the New Year's Eve. It sucked.

The point is that it is about where are the other housing options, it is about where the International community stands at Stanford. I'm sure 80% of the international students are rich like they go back home 3 times a year (believe me, there are). How about the others? Those who fly 14 years of flight to come the US with full financial aid and study their asses off, but woops, the season has passed, he/she is sleeping on the mattress under the piano. After the school starts, everybody looked all happy, he/she just pretended nothing happened. "How was your break?" "It was good." "What did you do?" "I stayed here." "Here, on campus? Oh..." Yeah, this is exactly how the conversation will go. God bless Stanford.

This is a great article. I'm glad the Daily gave this housing problem more visibility.

Report as: spam offensive Weena on 11/14/06 at 5pm

We paid $270 last year not $250, Fiona. The computer cluster at Hammarskjold is a horrible place to live in. I hated every moment of it. These days, just the name of Hammarskjold makes me shiver with loathing. I am glad that the university has decided to do something this year. But I don't want to stay on campus over the break no matter what.

Elizabeth Heng--
It's really good to know that ASSU cares about this issue and is working to help. Thanks.

Is there still such a thing as CCIS, Community Committee for International Students? They might...

I am amazed that nobody has mentioned something else - how difficult it is for students and others stuck on campus over the Winter Break to get out to buy that tuna from Safeway. The way Marguerite shuts down is shameful, and there were complaints last year, but it doesn't look as though much is being done. IS ANYTHING?

Stanford Housing practices discrimination when it comes to treating International Students right. Some of my international friends in East Coast colleges stay in decent hotels over the winter break which are paid for by the housing. And compare to what we get? Computer clusters and floor under painos. This is an outrage.
When the housing says letting people stay in their dorm rooms drains enegy and is a security concern, does it mean one or two persons in a dorm would consume the same amount of electricty the entire dorm consumes when it's not a break ? What about the security concern when no one is living in the dorms? The dorms would be safer with some people in it rather than no one in it all. Besides some of my American friends have expressed their desires at one point or another that they wanted to come back to Stanford earlier from the break but couldn't do so because of these restrictions. It's about time someone did something about thing.

Report as: spam offensive dennis the row chef on 11/17/06 at 9pm

I was disturbed after reading this article about the accomadations given to international students for the winter break. There is absolutly NO reason at a university such as Stanford, that students or anyone for that matter has to be treated like this. The university cites as one of it's reasons for limiting housing during break as increased energy costs. How weak is that for an excuse! The university can afford remodeling the stadium, moving and building new roads, moving entire houses and building huge undergroung parking structures but it can't allot a few bucks to treat the people humanely? During christmas even? I think Scrooge resides at Stanford.
