Because Palestinian patience has reached its limits with Israeli refusal to abide by the unenforced UN Resolution No.242(NOW OVER 39 YEARS OLD!) in which virtually the whole world, including America, agreed that Israel should withdraw from Palestinian lands.
That America must persuade Israel to withdraw or America will get no more oil from the Arabs; and since America will never force Israel to do this, and her economy will collapse without the oil. The Palestinian-Israeli War is an American War with American-Jewish soldiers fighting with weapons for the American territory of an American colony--Israel! The Americans have to win to save their [Israelis], their territory and they think, their very lives
Ask the Palestinians, who are being tear-gassed by American-made chemicals, shot by American weapons, and bombed by American missiles, how peaceful the U.S. is. The Israelis have killed many innocent Palestinians, and the U.S. has supplied the arms for their slaughter. If the U.S. would export half as much peace as it does weapons--working on feeding the poor, clothing the needy, and providing jobs to the destitute--then it would make the world a far better place!

"Admittedly, The Daily should have foreseen the likelihood of the Web comments feature getting out of control and being used for personal attacks." Believe me, that discussion was brought up within a week of the comments section going live, as were most of the other concerns brought up in this column, as one of the first stories to feature the comments section was a story on the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. At the time, the spam hitting the site was unbearable, so that was first addressed, followed by an attempt to follow a person's comments should it become necessary by including the email requirement. Unfortunately, resources were limited and that seemed to be the extent of the work that could be done until now.

Ted, you really ought to read Resolution 242 before you make pronouncements on it. It says nothing whatsoever about "Palestinian lands" because those lands, before 1967..were JORDANIAN! It does say Israel is entitled to secure and defensible borders, which it never has been offered, except by Egypt, and it is at peace with Egypt.

There is more. However, suffice it to say that your diatribe reflects no facts that I am aware of, only your own prejudices. Don't you think that those Palestinians who are shelling the Israeli city of S'derot are responsible for the Palestinian deaths in the counterattack?

Dear Editor - thank you for your timely article!
Ted - before Res. 242 you must go back to the mother of all UN Resolutions which tends to be left out of all relevant discussions - General Assembly Resolution 181 passed in 1947. This resolution was a recommendation to the United Nations, which suggested that the territory of the British Mandate be partitioned into a Jewish State and an Arab State in order to address the competing claims to sovereignty, and thus prevent war. It asked UN members to support Partition in order to prevent war. Unfortunately, it did not prevent war as the Arabs were not willing to agree to any form of partition or compromise.

By the end of the war, the Arab country of Jordan controlled the West Bank, expelled the Jews living in the West Bank (though their right to reside there had been guaranteed by Resolution 181), and annexed it. And though the annexation was not officially recognized, in practice it went without objection from the Palestinian Arabs or the UN.

And one other thing about UN Resolutions, Ted - Lebanon was supposed to disarm Hezbollah of their 16,000 missles as per UN Res. 1559 (2004).

Just thought I would mention that the comment flagging Whitney wrote about just went live. Now if you see something that bugs you in the comments, you can report it as offensive to bring it to an editor's attention.
