This argument has been made since the invention of the forward pass. sunday morning coaches with their rear-view perspective will always criticize the Prevent or the Blitz call that went wrong. Nothing new here.
How would you combine this with your analysis of John Smith's (Michigan State) decision to call a pass play on 3rd-and-3 on their own 19 late in the 4th. (oddly, ND was the beneficiary as well).

Funny ... had Nebraska gone with the Karl Dorrell play calling they most likely would have upset Texas. Instead, they played "gutsy" and gave the game to the Horns. Your analysis (typical among 'Furds) is superficial. The plays are very infrequently the problem - the execution is. Ucla failed to either gain a first or prevent ND scoring because their players did not execute and/or the Irish players simply played better. It is NOT because of play calling. You're proof that playing Madden or Tecmo doesn't give one any insight into real sports.

FYI - the "opposite flow" rollout pass to the TE or RB has been a staple of a Tedford offense since his days at Oregon. However he does it in practice, this play is as safe and has the same percentage as a running play on 3rd and 3-6 yards. So it wasn't really a "gutsy" play call. In the future, please don't use Tedford's name to gain legitimacy when you don't even understand the Cal system. Stanford has done really innovative things with the 3rd down quick-kick this year -- now you must find that impressive, since you probably can't even call this play in Madden.

No, Dump, we Cal fans are not bitter or angry. Just amused at what currently passes for "insight" on the Farm. You must be very proud.

UCLA's mistake at that game was that they failed to convert a 1st down late in the 4th quarter. But even so, they could have recovered from that mistake if Dorrell used better play calling. That game, Norte Dame had to march down from their own 30 yard line to score. If UCLA actually BLIZTED the QB or play same defense they were playing throughout the game, the result wouldve been different. The QB wouldnt have had all the time in the world to look for an open man and pass the ball. He literally almost had 6 seconds on this one play to look for an open man. That's just terrible play calling.

Jack -
can you come down to the stadium around noon this saturday? USC is coming in with a lot of passing options and a stout offensive line, so we'll need to mix up the pressure and cover defenses. I really need you to to analyze any offensive trends they show, determine our play and relay it to the defense.......oh, yeah, you'll need to do it in approx. 4 seconds. see you then, Walt.
