Named a No. 3 seed in the South Regional, the Stanford men’s basketball team will face another top academic school in its first round match-up with the Cornell Big Red on Thursday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The game will begin 25 minutes after the conclusion of the No. 6 Marquette vs. No. 11 Kentucky match-up at 11:30 a.m. PST and will be televised locally on CBS.
The Cardinal was rewarded with its highest NCAA Tournament seed since 2004, when it earned a No. 1. After finishing the season at 26-7 and 13-5 in Pac-10 play, the team draws 22-5 Cornell. The Big Red went undefeated in Ivy League play, running the table with a record of 14-0.
The winner of Thursday’s match-up will face the winner of the earlier Marquette-Kentucky game. Other notable teams in the South Regional, taking place in Houston, include No. 1 Memphis – which finished 33-1 on the year – and No. 2 seed Texas. Pittsburgh is the No. 4 seed while Michigan State is the five seed. Fellow Pac-10 squad Oregon, which squeaked into the tournament with an 18-13 overall record, is the No. 9 seed in the region.
The NCAA Tournament will officially kick off on Tuesday when Mount St. Mary’s takes on Coppin State in the play-in game. The other No. 1 seeds across the regions were UCLA (West), North Carolina (East) and Kansas (Midwest).
