Trent Johnson, Brook Lopez receive lofty honors
The Pac-10 Conference's yearly awards were handed out on Monday, and the Cardinal men's basketball team certainly wasn't left empty-handed.
After starting 19 of 21 games and averaging 18.9 points and 8.2 rebounds a game, sophomore big man Brook Lopez was named to All Pac-10 First Team. Head coach Trent Johnson received the honor of Pac-10 Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 24-6 regular-season record and a second place finish in the conference.
Junior guards Mitch Johnson, Anthony Goods and sophomore center Robin Lopez were all given Honorable Mentions. Robin Lopez was also named to the All Pac-10 Defensive Team.
UCLA freshman Kevin Love was named Player of the Year.
Harbaugh reprimands sophomores
Sophomores Ben Ladner and Chris Hobbs were suspended indefinitely by coach Jim Harbaugh for violating team rules, the San Jose Mercury News reported yesterday. Ladner, a 6-foot-3, 250 pound tight end, caught 27 passes for 198 yards and a touchdown last season.
Hobbs was the leading punt returner for the Cardinal last season, returning 18 punts for 122 yards.
