Stanford basketball’s freshman forward/center Jayne Appel will compete with 36 others at the USA U19 Junior National Team trials next weekend for a spot on the 2007 USA World Championship team.

Appel, the 2006-07 Pacific-10 Conference Freshman of the Year, made the U18 team last year. The 2006 USA team went undefeated, 4-0, to win a gold medal at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship.

A rookie from Pleasant Hill, Calif., Appel made her mark this past season with the Cardinal. She led the Cardinal in field-goal percentage with a 53.8 average. She also averaged 13.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in 33 appearances.

Joining Appel will be two more members of the Cardinal — except these two haven’t even reached the Farm yet. Incoming freshmen Kayla Pedersen and Jeanette Pohen have also been invited to compete.

Pedersen, a native from Fountain Hills, Ariz., also returns to the team after qualifying last year.

The trials are held May 17-20 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Each invitee will partake in a trial independently.

Stanford announced three more recruits to the 2007-08 men’s volleyball team yesterday. With the addition of Jordan Inafuku, Charley Henrikson and Garrett Dobbs, head coach John Kosty’s first group of signees moves up to five.

Inafuku, from Kamehameha School in Honolulu, is regarded as the top libero prospect of his class. He played on the 2005 USA Boy’s Youth National Team and the 2006 USA Men’s Junior National team. He is also a Junior Olympic All-American.

Dobbs, from Dallas, Tex., is a middle attacker/outside hitter. He was named an All-American at the USA Junior National Championship 16-and-under club division.

Henrikson, who hails from Lafayette, Calif., stands at 6-foot-6 and plays at middle blocker.
