Anthony Goods regained his shooting touch and the Cardinal responded to its first loss of the season with two home wins, capped by Saturday night’s convincing 73-53 victory over Colorado State.
Goods, the junior guard, scored 15 points, and junior forward Lawrence Hill added 15 points and eight rebounds to lead Stanford (6-1) against the Rams. Goods had shot 2-for-16 in his previous two outings but bounced back with a 6-for-13 performance that included seven straight points for the Cardinal in the first half.
“I put up a lot of shots in practice and started to get my confidence,” Goods said. “Sometimes you can shoot yourself out of it. But you have to give it to the hot hand and try not to force it too much.”
Stanford kept Colorado State cold on offense, holding the Rams (3-2) under 37 percent shooting from the field. Colorado State shot 7-for-27 in the first half, as the Cardinal took a 34-15 lead at the intermission.
“I thought our guys did a very, very good job defensively,” coach Trent Johnson said. “Going from one group to another group, the intensity didn’t slack off.”
Guard Willis Gardner was one of the few bright spots for Colorado State, scoring 14 points mostly off of dribble penetration.
After falling into a speed trap at Siena, Stanford slowed down the pace Saturday night and took care of the ball well, committing only five turnovers.
“We can always get a three, but we need to keep teams in the half court,” Johnson said. “Go inside out, physical, strong and use our advantages to our advantage.”
Goods agreed.
“We got sped up against Siena,” he said. “We have to slow down and pass to the open man. Thread the needle.”
Goods did just that during a first half run, hitting a streaking Robin Lopez for a perfect alley-oop that brought a relatively quiet Maples Pavilion to its feet.
“That was just part of our offense,” Goods said of the play, which he said was a spontaneous decision. “We just made eye contact.”
Siena 79, Stanford 67
Stanford suffered its first loss of the season nine days ago, falling 79-67 in an ugly upset at the hands of the Siena Saints in upstate New York on Nov. 17.
The shots were not falling for the Cardinal, which shot 36 percent from the field and put up 31 three-point attempts, sinking 12 (38 percent). The Saints played more aggressively and consistently drew fouls, getting to the line 32 times while Stanford managed only managed three free throw attempts.
Junior forward Josh Duell led the Saints with 16 points, nearly 10 over his season average. Junior guard Kenny Brown led the Cardinal with 12, while Lawrence Hill added 11.
Hill shot well from the field (5-of-7) and was Stanford’s only consistent scorer early in the game. He played few minutes in the second half, however, after aggravating a left ankle injury suffered Thursday against Northwestern.
Stanford trailed 33-31 at halftime and never managed to shake off its shooting doldrums. The Saints took control in the second half with a run that included three straight three-pointers.
Siena also overcame Stanford’s physical advantage inside, matching the Cardinal in rebounds at 35. The Saints took care of the ball well, committing only eight turnovers to Stanford’s 14.
It was a far cry from the last meeting between the two teams, a 92-72 Stanford win in which guard Anthony Goods scored a career high 30 points and center Robin Lopez had personal bests of 15 rebounds and six blocks. Goods struggled, however, attempting 12 shots and scoring only six points on a pair of three pointers.
Stanford 72, Yale 61
The Bulldogs hung around, but career games from sophomore center Robin Lopez and Lawrence Hill helped Stanford put away Yale 72-61 in a game played Tuesday night.
Lopez scored a career-high 24 points and added a season-best 12 rebounds for the Cardinal, which began a three-game home stand after suffering its first loss of the season on the road against Siena Nov. 17. Hill added a career-high 25 points.
Stanford led 36-26 at halftime largely thanks to Lopez, who nearly matched Yale on the boards with his eight rebounds to the Bulldogs’ 13. The pesky Yale squad hung on until the end, getting as close as 44-41 early in the second half before the Cardinal pulled away in the game’s final minutes.
