Stanford suffered its first loss of the season late Saturday morning, falling 79-67 in an ugly upset at the hands of the Siena Saints in upstate New York.

The shots were not falling for the Cardinal (4-1), who shot 36 percent from the field and put up 31 three-point attempts, sinking 12 (38 percent). The Saints (2-2) played more aggressively and consistently drew fouls, getting to the line 32 times while Stanford managed only three free throw attempts.

Junior forward Josh Duell led the Saints with 16 points, nearly 10 more than his season average. Kenny Brown led the Cardinal with 12, while Lawrence Hill added 11.

Hill shot well from the field (5-of-7) and was Stanford’s only consistent scorer in the early going. He played sparingly in the second half, however, after aggravating a left ankle injury suffered Thursday against Northwestern.

Stanford trailed 33-31 at halftime and never managed to shake off its shooting doldrums. The Saints took control in the second half with a run that included three straight three-pointers.

Siena also overcame Stanford’s physical advantage inside, matching the Cardinal in rebounds at 35. The Saints took care of the ball well, committing only eight turnovers to Stanford’s 14.

It was a far cry from the last meeting between the two teams, a 92-72 Stanford win to open last season in which guard Anthony Goods scored a career high 30 points and center Robin Lopez had personal bests of 15 rebounds and six blocks. Goods, however, struggled on Saturday, attempting 12 shots and scoring only six points on a pair of three pointers.
